1. In what ways do you think you improved your professional presence after completing the

eP?

I believe this blog post will improve my professional presence in many ways. For starters, it shows a dynamic and intuitive sense for understanding technology and utilizing those skills to communicate with the public. It also displays an attitude of someone who is willing to go above and beyond to provide professional feedback to anyone looking for it in the workplace. This would include confidence in one’s own abilities and experience, and capabilities. Lately, a professional communication major is supposed to learn the skills to be an ideal communicator in the workplace and externally for the company’s many publics.

2. Identify and explain what you like most about your ePortfolio.

One thing that I appreciate most about my online portfolio would be the vast and unlimited possibilities to display one’s talents, skills, expertise, and anything else that may provide notable information about one’s character to present professionalism. Juxtaposed to a resume, the online portfolio is comprehensive and can include anything the creator desires and therefor will be more representative of someone’s demeanor and beliefs more than a standard one-page resume ever could.

3. Identify the most challenging aspect of the eP.

The most challenging part of utilizing an online portfolio is maintaining and updating it to keep the information relevant. We are chronically changing, growing, and evolving, taking the time to log in and reupdate a website oppose to a word document is much more difficult and time consuming. It can be worth it in many regards, but nonetheless I would say it is the most difficult aspect of using an ePortfolio.

4. What advice would you give future students about the eP?

Adding relevant and quality pictures can make a portfolio seem more authentic as well as increase engagement from the reader. Creating an online portfolio is an ongoing process. The assignment becomes vastly easier by adding professional content as it is obtained. Do not wait to add awards and certificates as they come in. Procrastinating or rushing through such a project will be incredibly difficult and time consuming to find lost accolades that would make an impactful visual illustration.

In addition, publishing your portfolio onto all social media profiles is a great way to stay on top of managing your ePortfolio because whenever logging into social media platforms it will provide a visual reminder. This can also display professionalism to social media contacts and may even lead to job offers. There may be potential job openings unaware to many users.

5. What component of this course was most interesting to you?

The Nonverbal Communication course from ODU, is entirely engaging and one I highly recommend to anyone interested in divergently growing their understanding of the unspoken world around them. The statistical debunking of misconceptions about behavior choices was particularly confounding.

For example, beauty bias is a proven theory that indicates many individuals have the tendency to construe attractiveness with other positive characteristics. Studies have shown that this theory often leads to poor hiring practices in the workplace. This and many other ideas like observing deception and lie detection practices are typically minimized and misunderstood by the general public.

6. What did you learn from the Popular Press Analysis or Short Film Analysis?

The Popular Press analysis essay was a unique assignment. It was insightful to juxtapose a popular press article with peer reviewed research. I found that they most informative take away from the paper was the tendency for individuals to generalize nonverbal communication behaviors. Humans are complex creatures developed from hundreds of experiences that will impact nonverbal communication messages and should be understood as such.

7. How do you think this course could benefit you in your chosen career?

Internal management and public relations are two of many careers that depend heavily on encoding and decoding nonverbal signals in order to ascertain proper understanding from others in the work environment. Utilizing the theory’s learned from this course will provide helpful techniques for understanding a client or employee’s feelings and help prevent unbeknownst bias that lead many workers into poor decision-making choices on the job. Public relations the field that focuses on managing a company’s desired publics.

If your degree is in Professional Communications, Human Resources, or Public Relations, you could greatly increase your resume by learning video production. Communicating through videography to release messages on the company’s behalf through film is becoming customary. Understanding and practicing this field can improve your freelancing skills for many prospective employers who are in need of these abilities.

The Old Dominion Film Club is a terrific resource to develop your professional videography skills in addition to personal growth. The Old Dominion Film Club has meetings every Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7:15PM to 10:00PM. This club is open to the public and extraordinarily kind to new visitors. Tyler Brit will introduce and invite the new comer to share something they like about film. This is a testament to the atmosphere and welcome environment the group has. Screenplays are democratically elected to be turned into a major production at least once every semester. While these films are being workshopped, anyone has the ability to bring in personal or school projects for suggestions and advise from the group.

Anyone can be a part of the elected production. Group members can request positions and call sheet are emailed to anyone willing to help out. Professional cameras, lights, microphones, and other equipment will be supplied by ODU. Highly talented and skilled members help run the production and demonstrate knowledgeable vocabulary and practices in the field of video production.

My personal experiences have been informative and educational. Sometimes, I show up on set to help grip, setup, sound, or even act. No matter what, it is always a rewarding experience to work with friendly people and will advance your comprehension of videography. I chose to write a blog post about Building Professional Credibility through the medium of videography for PR and HR freelancing representatives. Dozens of messages and modes of address a company’s publics are communicated by videos. Moreover, they are increasingly needed every passing day. Businesses use Public Relations to communicate messages about the company for its intended publics. Businesses large enough to have these position openings will most likely outsource these video projects, which is expensive and time consuming compared to having them developed in-house.

Videos are quickly becoming the recommended way consumers prefer to receive information. YouTube is the second largest search engine in the world now. They are a quick and easy way to absorb information. If a company hires an employee for an HR or PR position, skills and knowledge in the field of videography are most likely needed as well. This could be an opportunity for a business to kill two birds with one stone.

This blog post enhances my online portfolio by demonstrating critical thinking skills by converting knowledge into a real-world application. It also addresses the climate of the Film Club. This was done to inadvertently communicate that, I place myself around people with good character and illustrate that my hobbies are a productive and healthy outlet. Lastly, I believe future employers would like to see candidates with relevant hobbies. Especially, when they are an intricate part of the Professional Communications field. It can demonstrate passion for the practice of Public Relations or even Human Resources in a professional light, while at the same time, providing forethought, and future ready mindset with insight on new PR tactics, and genuine interest in the profession its self.
